Shamanism and Sexuality: Paths of Transformation, Faculty

"Gender Variance in Traditional Shamanism"

The transformation from male to female is at the core of men becoming shamans in many "classical" shamanic cultures. These "transformed" shamans embody a fluidity in their sexual and gender identification and are seen by their culture as belonging to a third or alternate gender. This transformation appears primarily in cultures where the shamans are traditionally women. Male or female, the novice is first called by spirit, and then training begins. However, boys must first become female, and then train to become shamans. The transformation begins with learned behavior and outward changes, then progresses through sexual and physical transformation. Come join us for this lively presentation and discussion.

NOVEMBER 2009

Nov 4-8, Squamish, BC, Canada
1st Canadian Shamanic Conference

The First Shaman, Friday, Nov 6th 1:30 - 5:30pm

The First Shaman taught the next shaman, a human shaman, how to work with the spirits, conduct ritual and ceremony and to serve the people. This is important for us as contemporary shamans to realize. Each shaman, though human, endeavored to walk the path of that First god-like shaman. From this effort comes the morals and the ethics of the practice as well as the continual need for personal sacrifice, cleansing, and transformation to stay on that path.

Regardless of the shamanic culture in which we work, we are all contemporary humans. Indigenous or not, many of us awoke to our shamanic calling in a broken shamanic culture or a dominant culture that no longer honors or recognizes that path. Yet our capacity to be a shaman has been with us since birth. But was it recognized? Welcomed? Honored? Nurtured? Trained?

The First Shaman can guide us in the morals and ethics of our practices as S/he has from the origin of shamanism on earth. While most of us feel great passion and possibility in our practices we can't just do anything that "feels right" in the moment. We must temper our own metal with the determination to practice with integrity and impeccability.

How will we define that integrity? While we all go to Spirit for direction, the shamanic world is filled with Trickster spirits and the slippery ego who will shamelessly disguise itself as a helping spirit to continue to control the show. The First Shaman stands as a mentor in the spirit world for how we must interact and attend to each other to live together, thrive together and to do so in good relationship with other communities and the environment.

The First Shaman can also guide use is the development of our unique shamanic tools and gifts. It is these gifts, the uniqueness of each individual, that when given become the wealth of the community. Communities that do not effectively embrace diversity starve for lack of gifts. We must give of ourselves fully with humility and balance to weave the rich tapestry of community. The First Shaman guides each of us to live passionately and gracefully from that spark-of the original spark of life-that burns in our bellies.
