About

Welcome to the Last Mask Center

The original systemic healthcare was performed by the shamans and healers of the world's peoples. Well-being is maintained and sustained by a network of healthy relationships with self, family, community, the land, the elements, and the invisible world of helping spirits and ancestors. Shock, stress, and a disconnection from a unique purpose can cause fragmentation. Fragmentation makes it challenging to maintain the coherency and sovereignty of the physical and energy body. Initiated practitioners working with the guidance of plants and spirits find what is missing and repair the fragmentation. Or they extract or cleanse what is present that shouldn’t be, removing and returning invasive energies to wherever they can affirm life.

People of all ages fragment in response to unpredictable, prolonged, and extreme stress leaving them stuck in persistent patterns and disconnected from the quality of relationship with the physical world that would allow repair, ritual, and restoration, while offering an alternative to the habits of extraction, judgment, and dominance inherited from Colonizer/Settler thinking.

We excel in teaching the skills to engage the symbolic language of all of your Wisdom Bodies, not just the mind. With access to your symbolic language, you learn to heal the different fragments of self, reconnecting with truth, wholeness, and elemental wisdom to create the deep liberation of your soul’s unique genius. These same skills allow engagement in community-based protocols for ever-deepening healing and transformation of shadow selves, soul loss, and ancestral healing.

When we choose to invest in the repair of personal disconnection, fragmentation, and despair, we cultivate grounded presence and wholeness. These skills applied in a community that shares these skills allow for community-based remedies for collective patterns of social, economic, and environmental injustice. Our experiential teachings liberate us from internalized patterns of oppression and cultivate the practices of freedom, ritual, and whole-hearted relationship with all things. Our cosmology locates us in a larger whole, and our community aligns us with the power and responsibility to bring our gifts in ways that serve life.

"People say “we need a miracle”, and after experiencing the transformational impact of Energy Body Mastery and Energy Body Clearing in my life and for my community, I say; learn these skills and be that miracle!"

Our purpose is to offer an alternative way of living in the contemporary world, with all of its brokenness, heartache, and dysfunction. We choose first to abandon dominant ideas of scarcity and greed for an animist relationship with life and love, truth and freedom, power and responsibility. Through the online courses, we center BIPOC life and liberation, sexual and gender diversity, and build the basic life skills for a new/ancient way of living together.

For those humans who continue into the Cycle Teachings and Cycle Community, we choose to cultivate a strong working relationship with the invisible world, our own authentic spirit, and our community self. All classes offered by Last Mask Center are designed to teach the safe and responsible use of energetic techniques for self empowerment, personal healing, and strengthening connections with Spirit & Nature.

Together as a community, we hold ourselves accountable for learning, embodying the liberatory nature of the teachings, and keeping them active in the world. Embodying the teachings guides us in restoring relationship with each other, the past and the well Ancestors, the future and the Descendants, the local spirits of the land who move through the seasons with us, and the Great Spirits of the Land who help us to move with the climate and the elements that sustain life. We choose to move out of relentless, entitled consumption and learn to move into restorative and regenerative custodial relationships with the land. Where indigenous people ask us to share their teachings, we acknowledge elders and learn with humility. Where there are no elders or teachings offered, we go to spirit and ask for guidance.

WE ARE COMMITTED TO:

Diversity, spiritual adulthood, and stepping up with an open heart.

Cultivating and supporting an inclusive community of healers, leaders, and visionaries.

Fostering strong working relationships between people and their helping spirits.

Christina Pratt

Healer, teacher and author Christina Pratt founded Last Mask Center in 1990.

My first teacher was the great natural beauty of the land. I spent days, rain or shine, playing in the mature Madrone forests in my neighborhood, along the bank of the south Umpqua River, exploring the Oregon coast of the Pacific Ocean, camping up rivers, and later, sailing on mountain lakes with my family. Though unceded by all of the First Peoples who call this territory home, this land has called me back home after every phase of my life. And so I live here, offering regular tithing to those many first peoples who tended and still tend this land.

I found my first love at 5 years old when my mother placed me in dance class to save her sanity. Too young to articulate any of this awareness at the time, I can still access the body memory of finding safety and freedom in dance. Dancing taught me to live in my body in spite of the constant pressure from the dominant sexist culture to abdicate and vacate my body for boys and men. The discipline and repetition of ballet taught embodiment through movement, challenged me to find my center, again and again, and to extend my sense of alignment along my own central line. This orientation in physical space allowed me to develop excellent coping strategies for my wildly dyslexic mind that repurposed easily as navigation in alternate states of consciousness. Dance still brings joy, and this love only deepens with the years.

My next teacher was science. I find the answers to questions like “how does the world work?” and “why am I here?” dictated by organized religion, colonizer culture, and unhinged capitalism heartbreakingly deficient, even as a child. I figure the climate crisis proves that these answers are at best wrong and at worst greedy, intentional lies. But here we are. In the 1980s, I studied science, specifically chemistry, to learn how the world works. Science taught me how to use my mind, to question, and how to test a hypothesis. It confirmed that life on earth is inherently magical, elegant, and at times unknowable.

While I was learning to use my mind, I was simultaneously learning to question all I had been taught, question my thinking, my assumptions, and my reality. I was a distracted and argumentative student in an informal apprenticeship with master diviner, author, and artist William Douglas Horden. His enduring trickster impact taught me about discomfort and the hazard of certainty. During this time, I was a somewhat more disciplined student of Phyllis Pay, a master teacher of intuitive energy processing and energy body clearing. She presented the hypothesis that we have one true responsibility: the development of our souls. Her teaching became the foundation for The Basics of Humaning Well.

These loves and teachers and choosing to return to dancing changed my relationship with my own brokenness. Working with Life as the Teacher and my odd assortment of skills and practices, I disentangled myself from old mental and emotional trauma-based patterns. That commitment to liberation shoved me through a threshold into a kind of adulthood that was formed just enough to ground a spontaneous, 3-day initiatory experience while living in Manhattan. I did not know what happened at the time. I did know it was the single most significant thing that would ever happen to me and that the me on the other side of it was a better human.

Initiation is a specific transformation. It left me with clarity and questions. I traveled to learn from practitioners working in their traditional cultures to understand the questions they asked, how they asked, and how they worked those responses with their people. I am deeply grateful to the Shuar, Nepalese, Tibetan, Dagara, Zulu, and Quechua shamans and the many ways that they shared their practices, work, and the philosophies that interweave it all. While I do not practice or teach any of these traditions, they all helped me to understand what it means to enter into a working relationship with spirit.

I understand more after researching and writing An Encyclopedia of Shamanism. Colonization undermines initiation by design and creates ugly, broken cultures with a complete lack of functional community, true elders, and regenerative relationship with the land and planet. Today, my healing and teaching are offered to honor my teachers, my loves, and the land. My prayer is that it moves us toward the restoration of true animist community, elders, Ancestors, and regenerative relationship with the land.

Langston Kahn is a shamanic practitioner and teacher specializing in radical human transformation, ancestral healing, and the restoration of an authentic relationship with our emotions. He stands firmly at the crossroads, his practice informed by the contemporary shamanic tradition of the Cycle of Transformation, somatic modalities, initiations into traditions of the African Diaspora, training with indigenous elders and his helping spirits, and ancestors weaving it all together. He gives workshops and lectures globally in person and online and is the author of Deep Liberation: Shamanic Teachings for Reclaiming Wholeness in a Culture of Trauma.

Langston

Langston carries the lineage founded by Christina Pratt of the Last Mask Center. He believes that “We cannot wait for our culture to become whole so we can heal. We must become the people resilient, creative, and courageous enough to bring healing to ourselves and others from within a fractured culture.” Langston has trained, organized, and led (as part of a shared leadership by council model) within the Cycle Community for over a decade. The Cycle Community holds the teachings of the Cycle of Transformation. The Community is a collective of people striving to live in alignment with ancient animist principles and applying them in service of personal and collective liberation.

Why These Teachings by Langston Kahn:

The teachings Christina Pratt has brought through from spirit have helped me to completely transform challenges that western therapy seems to feel at best we can learn to manage, while learning skills to align deeply with my authenticity, unique purpose, and sense of calling.

Through these teachings at LMC, I have healed internalized racism, homophobia, femmephobia and other ways my mind was colonized.

Growing up I felt the pain of realizing that adults didn’t have the answers to the immense mental, emotional, and spiritual challenges my peers and I were facing. Way back in 2010, Christina was one of the first people I encountered that contextualized these challenges in terms of our culture’s failure to tend the gates of birth, initiation into adulthood, eldership, and death and our personal failure to value and center learning skills for tending relationship with the more than human world and our own souls.

I have also healed into a deeply intimate and viscerally grounding relationship with the Earth.

This realignment moved me to start centering permaculture farming and land justice movements in my life.

With these teachings I have healed deep ancestral wounds and cultivated a relationship of joy and support with my ancestors that anchors me in all that I do. As a mixed race Black man who grew up dislocated from his own ancestral practices, I am immensely grateful for the way these teachings have helped me get to a place where I could approach my own ancestral traditions as a spiritual adult and ultimately initiate in some of them.

In the 14 years working with Christina, The Last Mask Center, and The Cycle Community, I feel I have become the adult my younger self badly needed. Being part of this community of practice gives me hope that we might still create a future for the next generations that we are proud to offer them.”
